Coaching certification is great, but do you need to be certified to be a life coach? What reasons are there for getting a coaching certification? These are great questions to ask if you want to be a life coach. One popular reason to get coaching certification would be to learn coaching techniques. Another reason would be to help your prospects believe you are qualified to coach them. Yet another reason could be that you believe you will get more clients than someone who does not have a certification. All of those reasons seem pretty good, but let’s look at them more closely. Are they really true? Do you need to be certified to be a life coach?

Do You Need To Be Certified To Be A Life Coach? Just Any Coaching Certification Course Will Not Be A Quick Fix

A lot of people take coaching certification courses because they believe it works just like going to college and getting a career. However, there are some problems with looking at coaching that way. While some people see going to college, getting a degree and then getting a job as a measure of success, in life coaching you would need a lot more than one client to be considered a success. Not only should you take a look at what other life coaches have done to be successful, but also ask yourself what do you need to be a certified life coach who considers himself to be successful.

When I get asked the question, “Do you need to be certified to be a life coach?,” I respond by asking why one feels the need to get certified. Usually, people think it will give them credibility with their prospects. This may be true, but you will want to do some homework before you dive into coaching certification by finding out if there are any particular certifications that your prospects will expect you to have. For example, some financial advisers obtain financial planner certification because it is one certification that prospects recognize. Other certifications may appear as meaningless letters on the end of their name. By learning what certifications your clients will recognize, you will avoid wasting time and money getting a coaching certification that means nothing to your clients.

If you are still hesitant about getting a coaching certification, the best way to start getting clients is to do free coaching sessions. You are applying for the job of being their coach. They need to have a great experience coaching with you. Do you need to be a certified life coach to enroll clients? NO. All you need is the ability to help them get results.

Do you need to be certified to be a life coach? Not before you get started. Over time you should get certified because great coaches are lifelong learners. However, don’t make the mistake of waiting to take certification courses before getting started coaching and making a difference for your clients.

What inner game coaching steps are necessary to have success coaching your clients in the long run?  You will need to keep them emotionally connected to you.  I have success coaching my clients to make more sales.  The inner game coaching I do with them is very important to keep them wanting me to coach them long enough to get results.  Over time we develop such a strong emotional bond and trust between us that they ask me for coaching in all areas of their life.    When we use the term “inner game coaching” we are talking about client’s beliefs, feelings and comfort zones.  There are three things your clients need to get from you to keep them as your client long term.

To Have Success Coaching Clients They Need To Feel You Value Them As an Individual

The most important thing your clients need to believe about you to have success coaching them is that you personally value them.  You cannot do effective inner game coaching if your clients believe you do not care about them.  It doesn’t matter how much you know because they won’t listen.  One way to make your client feel that you personally value them is to take good notes during your sessions.  Really listen to them and do not be “waiting to talk”.

Praising Your Clients Efforts Must Be Done to Have Success Coaching Them to Get Results

To have success coaching your clients you need to praise their efforts.  It doesn’t matter how small their actions may seem to them.  To give them inner game coaching that is only focused on what they didn’t do well will discourage them.  If your client gets no encouragement from you they will stop coaching with you.  If you make them feel like they are making progress it will motivate them to keep trying and not give up. 

If you do the first two steps discussed so far you will have success coaching your clients.  You will now need to give your clients inner game coaching on how to view their wins.  A lot of people ignore their wins and focus on their disappointments.  For your client to feel like they are making progress toward their goals you will need to teach them to celebrate their wins.  Celebrate with them over the phone on their coaching session.  Pat them on the back and tell them they did a great job.  If you do these things you will have many clients stay with you for a long time and you will have a satisfying coaching business.

Mastermind groups are a waste of time in growing your life coaching business?  Sound sacrilegious?  Sure, but they are one of the most common pitfalls people fall into at one point or another during their life coaching career.  Here’s why.  A bunch of coaches sit around, usually on the phone, for an hour or so every week and talk about their life coaching businesses.  They support each other in their life coaching career goals.  And over the course of the year it amounts to over 40 hours of time!

Coaching Tips: Coaching Strategy That Will Help 90% of Your Clients

Are there any universal coaching tips? Is there one coaching strategy you can use for just about anyone? If you are asking these questions, you are probably looking for some sense of certainty. Certainty is also related to comfort and safety. And you will naturally attract people who are similar to you in some way; probably because they are looking for certainty as well. And let’s face it; most people don’t feel safe enough to make changes until they at least have some sense of certainty. So a solid coaching strategy and a few coaching tips will be able to get most people moving forward toward their goals.

Without a Coaching Strategy, Coaching Tips are Practically Useless

Why do we need a coaching strategy to help our clients get more certainty? How do you feel when you are hoping that something will happen? What coaching tips are you willing to take? Are you hesitant? Most likely, you are not going to get momentum until you get past that hesitation. I know from my own experience, that as the days get shorter and nights get longer I can become really committed to having more comfort in my own life. And the last few people I’ve enrolled have been very certainty driven. One even admitted that she has always been a “Certainty Kind of Kid.”

Make Certainty Your Coaching Strategy

The most straightforward coaching strategy to move forward is to change your mind state to that of someone who has total certainty that they will succeed. This can be done by taking your client through a series of coaching tips to get them into a physiological state of being that allows them to literally feel that feeling. All of our memories are stored in our subconscious; right down to details of sight, sound, taste and feel. These memories can be used again and again if we choose.

Alternately, Some Coaching Tips Get Away from Certainty Altogether


.

Another coaching strategy is to help clients learn to love time away from certainty. Too much certainty is not going to get people out of bed, let alone to the next level of achievement. Give your clients some coaching tips on how to use that feeling of uncertainty to identify possible obstacles or threats to their success for a limited period of time (a half hour, for example). Then get them to move back to a more empowered state of mind so they know they can handle those obstacles.

And the best coaching strategy to help people gain certainty is to get them enrolled in some type of coaching program so they will have support to move past their fears. All the coaching tips in the world won’t do a bit of good unless they’re applied to a real coaching program.

There can be that air of apprehension or even fear that keeps you from taking that first step. And let’s be honest, you probably know something about how to get life coach clients. What helped me in learning how to get life coach clients and take my life coaching business to the next level was something I learned from pulling out my daughter’s tooth for the first time. My precious, sweet, little girl who I have protected since she was in the womb. One of her teeth was dangling by a thread, and it hurt her quite a bit. Up until that point, the school nurse pulled her teeth out. But unfortunately today was Friday, and the tooth was not going to last through the weekend. My daughter begged me to end her suffering with the tooth.

What does this have to do with how to get life coach clients? There was enough pain so that I was brave enough to try. What other lessons can you learn about how to get life coach clients from a story about pulling teeth? I only had one chance, failing my daughter would cost me a lot. Thankfully that is rarely the case in your life coaching business. Even if you fall on your face, you can try again with someone else. And chances are you don’t live with them to have them constantly remind you that you really hurt them.

And the most important lesson is to take action. It’s the only way how to get life coach clients, take your life coaching business to the next level. It’s not about getting tough; it’s not about trying to get your clients to be more afraid of you than what they commit to. For your clients to have a successful coaching experience, you need to get them to move past whatever is holding them back. Here are three coaching tips that will guide you.

In coach training you found your passion as a Coach but chances are you were not given enough coaching sales training to show you how to get clients consistently.  You may not view yourself as a “salesperson”.  Coach training can make you a good coach and that’s great, but it’s not enough.  The reality is that coaching sales training is necessary to show you how to get people to contact so coaching will not be just a hobby for you like it is most coaches.  Instead it will be profitable business.

One great way to do this is to go to people that you know and ask them for help.  Let them know that you are growing your coaching business and they could really help you out with some referrals.  Be sure you remember your coaching sales training and follow these steps…

  • Educate them about who is a good referral for you.  If you don’t educate them they will send you the wrong person for your coaching.  If that happens, all the coach training you have received will not be well accepted and it will hurt your confidence.

  • Finally here is the coaching sales training that will really help you.  Ask them “of everyone you know who is the best referral for me?”  Then be silent for as long as it takes for them to respond.

Health coaching is not for the faint of heart during the flu season. Once everyone has been vaccinated, what’s left to do? Just sit and wait for the inevitable? Wellness coaching is especially valuable during the holiday season. Unfortunately most people aren’t out looking for health coaching right now; they are gearing up for the holidays. But if you start promoting wellness coaching now, you can really help make it a happy new year.

Why Wellness Coaching and Health Coaching Are Somewhat Seasonal

It’s not coincidental that flu season starts in October, but how can wellness coaching help? It’s a virus, right? Yes, and no. What I learned from my health coaching training is that we have viruses among us all year around. So why do they attack us most aggressively during this time of year?

So much of what most people think about health coaching is telling people what to do, or not to do. But the real source of the flu season is from what I refer to as the “Certainty Season.” This is the time when we are looking for comfort and security. Sipping hot chocolate or hot toddies by the fire and snuggling up in our favorite blanket. It gets darker earlier and we look for comforts in all the wrong places. Like overeating and drinking. Our drive for comfort even keeps us away from the gym. And most people will avoid wellness coaching at this time of year like the plague. But why?

Health Coaching and the Holidays

The real kickoff to the season starts with Halloween. As my neighbor said once, “My favorite holiday is Halloween. Let’s be honest. No family, no presents to shop for, and no stress. It’s all about the candy!” Then we have Thanksgiving and Christmas which are more about food and family; in that order. And lot’s of stress. Don’t forget Hannukah with its fried potato pancakes and donuts. By the time we get to New Year’s Day, we are firmly committed to never follow THAT pattern again. Now people start looking for wellness coaching, health coaching, and any other type of coaching that will get them out of the rut.

Make Wellness Coaching a Year-Round Affair

Instead of promoting health coaching to beat people over the head to get them do what they know they should do, why not promote wellness coaching to help people get their needs met for certainty in different ways. When they see how their behaviors really don’t provide certainty and comfort, and in fact might destroy what they are truly going after by making them more susceptible to the flu; they just might start working on their health before it disappears.

Health Coaching Basics: Become a Health Coach Who Sees What Most Coaches Miss

You can become a health coach just by asking the right questions. I was doing an initial goal setting session with someone this morning and it unexpectedly became a health coaching session. I say unexpectedly because this guy seemed like a fitness guru himself, until I asked some clarifying questions. Truth be known, he only sleeps an average of 3 or 4 hours a night. I don’t specialize in health coaching, but I recognized that pattern of adrenal burnout syndrome; in other words, running on adrenaline after you are exhausted. I was also able to predict his other issue of being addicted to junk food and explain his difficulty with focusing on tasks. Here’s how you can recognize this pattern and help others, whether you decide to become a health coach or not.

Become a Health Coach Who Knows that Health Coaching is Important for Everyone


.

What you first need to become a health coach who can help people with this common pattern is to recognize normal sleep cycles. Most people start getting sleepy by 10pm, and for this particular client it was about the same. What happens to him is the same thing we see in children. If they keep going through their natural cycle of sleepiness, they start using adrenaline to keep going. You don’t have to be an expert at health coaching to recognize when children are running around wild long past they should be in bed, not looking the least bit sleepy. They get so hyped up that they have a tough time calming down. Adults do the same.

The second thing to recognize if you want to become a health coach, or do any type of health coaching, is that lack of sleep affects our appetites. Not too long ago I read a n article about a study from the New England Journal of Medicine that talked about hormone regulation with and without sleep deprivation. It turns out that people who have 5 hours or less of sleep show elevated levels of hormones that increase appetite and lower levels of hormones that suppress appetite compared to control groups who slept 7 hours. To paraphrase the results, lack of sleep makes you crave more calories. You really didn’t need to go to all that effort to prove that to me!

Health Coaching Still Involves Clients’ Needs and Desires


.

As I mentioned before, I am not a health coaching expert. But I was able to cut through this clients ‘story’ and find out what he was trying to tell me about his apparent lack of focus and motivation just by asking a few clarifying questions. But even when you become a health coach, don’t forget that you still need to uncover how your clients are getting their needs me by their behavior and how that drives their action. Even when I helped this client see what his behavior was costing him in some major areas of his life, he was still not ready to make a change. He was afraid by not driving himself so hard he would not to feel as significant and he might loose out on the love and connection he was getting from his current behavior.

Become a Health Coach Who Can See Beyond Diet and Exercise


.


You can start to become a health coach right where you are by caring enough to continue to ask enough questions to get to the real issues. When you can ‘read clients minds’ and predict their other issues based on what recognizing patterns, they will naturally see you as the person who can solve their problems. Whether you are a health coaching guru or not. Just make sure you don’t let anything slide, because what they almost tell you is usually what they need to tell you the most.

The next step as a relationship coach is to help your clients’ associate massive pain if they don’t change and massive pleasure if you do.  Make the decision to change an obvious solution.  You can also find out what leverage they’ve used in the past to make other life changes.  Find out what they did, how they felt, and what they said to themselves to help make that change and use that information to help move them forward again.

Become a Parent Coach Who Encourages Their Clients to Use Distraction: This was one of my dad’s favorites when my sister and I were not getting along well in the back seat of the car. One day we were driving through a very rural area and he suddenly yelled, “Hey guys! Look at the tomatoes!” There was such enthusiasm in his voice that we looked, and then started laughing. The tomato plants were so small that we were basically looking at a field of sticks that would eventually support the plants. The behavior of quarreling was incompatible with the new stimulus. He could have become a life coach with that one phrase, because any time we began quarreling he would use the same phrase and get the same result. With or without tomato plants.

Become a Parent Coach Who Teaches Their Clients to Change the Motivation: This one takes some understanding and planning, but is very effective. When I am driving in the car with my children, I can gauge how tired, hungry, or bored they are by their behavior. Become a life coach who helps point out that children may be hungry and tired on the way home from an after school activity, and encourage parents prepare a healthy snack for them. For longer car trips kids might need to stop at a ‘rest stop’ and run around for a few minutes to manage the pent up energy.

In Your Face Life Coach Training: A Free Coach Training Session From An Unlikely Source

Life Coach Training Can Happen Anywhere

A friend of mine sent me some free coach training at the end of an email. It simply stated, “Don’t let what you cant’ do prevent you from doing what you can!” This life coach training came from my friend Annie, who is an amputee. She lost both legs above the knees and most and her fingers due to a severe illness that almost took her life. She is someone who really lives this message, so coming from her it is a life coach training in itself. Her free coach training lessons started a few years ago when I was nervous about doing something outside my comfort zone. Annie was also doing something outside of her comfort zone, and I said something to the effect that she could handle it. To this she retorted, “What makes you think my challenges are less of a challenge than yours?”

Sometimes Free Coach Training Doesn’t Need Words

This life coach training hit me like a ton of bricks. How could I have devalued the challenges that she had? The challenges Annie has gone through to be able to walk again with only a single cane, the joy at being able to walk through a buffet line and put food on her own plate, even go up a flight of stairs on her own. But the real miracle in all this is not that she is able to walk again, but who she has become in the process and what she has really accomplished in her life. How she is able to encourage other women in a very big way, without drawing attention to herself. Her life is valuable life coach training.

Free Coach Training Comes in Every Shape and Size

So what’s the life coach training to be learned? The first free coach training lesson is that wherever we are, if we are growing we will have challenges. It’s not the size of the challenges we face, but how we decide to take them on. Brian Tracey wrote a book called, “Eat That Frog.” If we are faced with a big, ugly frog, we should eat it first. Even if it’s going to take several bites.

Some Free Coach Training You Have to Earn

And the second life coach training to be learned from this is that we all have excuses for not taking on the next challenge. We can wallow in a “Pity Party” or we can choose to be great. Annie was “comfortable” being confined to a wheelchair, and struggled when someone came up with a solution that would allow her to walk again. The solution was definitely disguised in overalls, and took almost a year of sweat and tears to accomplish. It was really not “free coach training” for her. She earned it.

There’s No Such Thing as Free Coach Training

What will you take home from this life coach training? What are the challenges you face? No clients? No time? No money? If you do what you can when you can do it, eventually you will find yourself closer to your goals. My father always said, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” And there really is no such a thing as “free coaching training.” Something is always required of you. The question is, will you be ready to step up to the plate and take action?

One of the great things about having your own life coaching business is that you get to decide your pay for life coach activities. Unfortunately this doesn’t work out as well as it sounds for most coaches because they want to be nice and help people. Here are 5 things you can do to increase your pay for life coach work, and perhaps even pass along to your clients even if they are not in the life coaching business.

1st Way to Increase Your Pay for Life Coach Products and Services: Charge more. Sounds a bit sacrilegious to many coaches, I know. But you don’t help people get rich by being poor, and you don’t help people who are poor by being poor yourself. You have to transform the money side of your life coaching business instead of helping them. So don’t be afraid to charge for what your time is worth. Most coaches can increase their fees by 20 to 50%. And let’s face it; to some extent the more you charge people, the more they value your products and services.

2nd Way to Increase Your Pay for Life Coach Products and Services: Set up payment programs. Instead of having people pay the entire amount up from, allow them to make payments over 3 months. It’s easy to do, and that way your life coaching business will be able to reach people who might not otherwise be able to get your help.

3rd Way to Increase Your Pay for Life Coach Products and Services: Add more value. You can add bonuses, offer better programs, and create new products. Think of ways your life coaching business can make a difference for others.

4th Way to Increase Your Pay for Life Coach Products and Services: Create exclusivity. When something is exclusive, it is perceived as more valuable. My grandfather used to put a ‘sold’ sign on one of the cash registers he had for sale. Inevitably someone would come into the store and want to buy that one. I’m not advocating to do that in your life coaching business, but if you only have 20 spots open people value it more. And if they’re one of the few, they feel special too.
